LE NOSTRE VACANZE IN MASSA LUBRENSE
Mille grazie ad una famiglia
molto amichevole, la Signora Maria Persico e i suoi figli Giovanni e Antonio
(che parlano entrambe un inglese eccellente), per una piacevole vacanza nella
loro villa tra le colline che sovrastano Massa Lubrense, vicina a Sorrento.
Noi siamo stati per una settimana in Giugno 2001 e ne abbiamo apprezzato ogni minuto.
L'appartamento era spazioso, moderno e completamente corrispondente alla descrizione
"di ottima qualità". All'esterno, la terrazza era piacevolmenteben ombreggiato e
la baia di Napoli con l'isola di Capri era visibile attraverso le piante di olive
e limoni.
Le strade sono molto strette e l'accesso potrebbe essere
difficile per qualsiasi cosa eccetto le piccole macchine, ma il servizio pubblico è
agevole se si è preparati ad un piccola passeggiata. Quindici minuti fino a Massa, e
da lì gli autobus per Sorrento circa ogni ora, che costano 1 euro per una singola
corsa. Giovanni molto gentilmente ci ha trasportato con i nostri bagagli da Sorrento
sino all'appartamento. Da Sorrento abbiamo visitato Pompei e Capri con facilità con
il treno o con l'aliscafo. Ci sono molti sentieri ben segnalati, e noi ne abbiamo
apprezzato uno che ci ha portato da vicino al porto di Massa, fin su di una collina
che affaccia su Massa stessa e poi giù sino in città. In comune con il resto
della costiera il porto era roccioso e non aveva una reale spiaggia, ma ciò non
impediva alle persone di crogiolarsi al sole su dei grossi lastroni levigati di pietra
disposti lungo la costa.
Ci sono parecchi ristoranti economici e molte drogherie, fruttivendoli e
negozi che vendono ghiottonerie. Noi abbiamo particolarmente apprezzato i cuori di
carciofi imbottigliati dalla madre di uno dei negozianti, e il vino rosso locale che
abbiamo provato era gradevole, tuttavia l'unica bottiglia di vino bianco che abbiamo
comprato era scadente. L'unico momento nel quale avremmo voluto una macchina era quando
trasportavamo la nostra massa di acquisti di acqua e vino su per la colline.
Noi speriamo di ritornare entro qualche anno per percorrere altri di quei sentieri
, rivedere la stupenda Pompei di nuovo, visitare Napoli ed il Vesuvio,
ammirare la costa amalfitana, e godere ancora dell'ospitalità della signora Maria, di
Giovanni ed Antonio. Oh si - e prendere ancora una o due bottiglie del gradevole limoncello
fatto in casa dalla signora Maria.

OUR HOLIDAY IN MASSA LUBRENSE
Many thanks to a very friendly
family, Signora Maria Persico and her sons Giovanni and Antonio (who both
speak excellent English), for a delightful holiday in their villa in the
hills above Massa Lubrense, close to Sorrento. We stayed for one week in June
2001 and enjoyed every minute. The apartment was spacious and modern and
fully deserved the description "of optimal quality". Outside, the terrace was
thankfully well shaded and the Bay of Naples with the island of Capri was
just visible through the olive and lemon trees.
The roads are very
narrow and access would have been difficult for anything but the smallest
car, but public transport is easy if you are prepared for a little walking.
Fifteen minutes down to Massa, and then buses about every hour to Sorrento,
costing 1 euro for the single journey. Giovanni very kindly ferried us and
our luggage between Sorrento and the apartment. From Sorrento we visited
Pompeii and Capri with ease on the train or hydrofoil. There are many
well-marked local walks, and we enjoyed one of them which took us from near
Massa's semi-detached small port, up a hill overlooking Massa itself and then
down into the town. In common with the rest of the coastline, the port was
rocky and had no real beach, but this didn't stop people from sizzling in the
sun on the big flat slabs of stone laid along the shore.
There were
several reasonable restaurants and plenty of small grocery, vegetable and
delicatessen shops. We much appreciated the artichoke hearts bottled by the
mother of one of the shopkeepers and the local red wine we tasted was
enjoyable, although the only bottle of white we bought was poor. The one time
we would have been grateful for a car was when carrying our bulk purchase of
water and wine up the hill!
We hope to return in a few years to do some
more of the walks, see the amazing Pompeii again, visit Naples and Vesuvius,
admire the Amalfi coast, and enjoy again the hospitality of Maria, Giovanni
and Antonio. Oh yes - and buy another bottle or two of Maria's smooth
home-made limoncello.
